Sight: Create a meditation space that is visually pleasing. Start by gathering all your treasures, items you feel hold a spiritual value, in one place and easily accessible. Some of my favorite treasures are my shells, crystals, and rocks that I have gathered through adventures in nature and from my favorite metaphysical stores. If you have a dedicated meditation space, you can organize them in a pleasing manner, creating an altar. If you know you will have a busy day and need some support or are traveling, have a cloth bag handy and take a few items with you. Wherever you are, having your treasures nearby immediately transforms a space, and helps set the energy for your meditation.
Smell: I enjoy lighting incense or a candle before the start of my meditation practice. This helps me shift gears, turning my attention inward for release and rejuvenation, preparing me to release all the thoughts and challenges of the day. If you are traveling, make sure you are in an area free of any offending odors as this can be a major distraction when trying to focus.
Sound: Generally I enjoy silence when meditating. However, if there is noise in the vicinity or if I am feeling particularly distracted, I will turn on instrumental music created specifically for a meditation practice. Individual or combined tracks can also be used as a timer for your practice.
Taste: I enjoy a good cup of tea or hot chocolate before or after meditation. I find the mindfulness used in creating a pleasing beverage can really set the stage for my practice and help celebrate the beginning or the end of my practice. Make sure you don’t go into meditation hungry as it will act only as a distraction.
Touch: Get comfy! The focus of meditation should be inward and not aggravated by uncomfortable surroundings. Find a good chair, cushion or couch that allows your back to be comfortably upright and helps energy flow easier. Next, check the temperature of your surroundings. If you are cold, get a blanket. If you are warm, have a fan and some cool water nearby. Set yourself up for success by ensuring your are comfortable making the meditation process even more enjoyable.
